For a student who demonstrates courage in overcoming obstacles and pursuing academic excellence and dreams. Isabel Chavez was the 2016 RAPSA Courage Award recipient. Ms. Chavez has been admitted to Mount Mary University as a Social Work major. This year, five scholarships of $1,000 each will be awarded through the generosity of Learn4Life schools.
Students are eligible for the Courage Award if they are enrolled in high school during the 2016-17 school year; will graduate high school by December 2017; and are eligible for enrollment in a post-secondary program by September 2018. Nominees may include reengaged students or others who have faced unusual barriers to completing their high school education and did so recognizing the value of a high school diploma for personal, family or community accomplishments. |
For a legislator or policy maker who demonstrates vision in pursuing creative policies that lead to the reengagement of at promise youth. California Assembly Member Eduardo Garcia was the 2016 Vision Award recipient. Assembly Member Garcia is now the Principal Co-Author of ACR 102, the Opportunity Youth Reengagement Month resolution.
Nominations are open for policy makers who have demonstrated exceptional understanding of the challenges faced by at promise youth and pursued policies to facilitate their engagement. Nominees may include legislators, governmental officials and other policy makers who develop and implement creative policies or programs to attract and retain students who would otherwise be left out of traditional school programs. |
For educators or community program administrators who demonstrate a heart for at promise students and the challenges that they face in overcoming them. Freddie Fuentes, the Executive Director of Boston Public Schools’ Educational Options division, was the 2016 Heart Award recipient. Mr. Fuentes created 13 school-based adolescent health centers within the Boston Public Schools and is at the forefront of building connections between schools, families, and communities.
Nominations are open for teachers or administrators who have demonstrated the capacity to see beyond the trauma faced by at promise students and reengage them with respect and integrity. Nominees may include teachers, other education leaders and administrators of community programs serving opportunity youth that offer abundant levels of support to enable at promise students to continue on in their academic endeavors despite conflicting life challenges. | ||||||
